Violin

The Violin is the featured section of the Orchestra, providing hauntingly beautiful melodies that sound like the human voice and tug at our heart strings.

About The Violin:

  • The Role: The primary voice of the Orchestra. Violins usually have the most notes to play and lead the "story" of the music with their high melodies.

  • Special Qualities: It is a string instrument played with a bow. Because there are no keys or frets, you have total control over the pitch, allowing for a very "human" and emotional sound, without using your breath to play.

  • Ideal for: Students who are detail-oriented and want to play in an Orchestra or String Ensemble. It is perfect for those who want an instrument that can express a huge range of feelings.

Other Instruments in the Orchestra and their roles:

Viola: The inner voice, able to play high melodies like the Violin, and low parts like the Cello. This instrument is the best of both worlds.

Cello: With one of the most unique sounds, the Cello provides the tenor support in the orchestra, being both a low and voice and able to soar above the rest, similar to the Euphonium of the band.

Double Bass: The low end foundation. Similar to the Tuba of the band, the Bass can provide the lowest sound in the ensemble that everything else relies on for support. The orchestral Double Bass can translate to Electric Bass for playing in rock bands or jazz bands.

Why we only offer Violin: Violin is a wonderful gateway into the world of orchestra. It is accessible, and easy to translate to other instruments, and entry is low-friction. Viola is such a unique instrument because it reads Alto clef, it is hard to transition from Viola to other instruments, but easy to go from Violin to other instruments, including Viola. And Cello and Bass are very large and expensive, so it is ideal to make sure you know what you are doing, and are truly committed for the long run before making such a large time and financial investment. Typically students who want to play these instruments use school owned instruments, so they do not need to buy or transport their own. If this is your desire, get a head start on the norms and rules of orchestra on violin, then switch when you join at school! If you only want to learn Viola, Cello, or Bass, contact us to discuss a plan just for you!
