Saxophone
The Saxophone is a well rounded instrument that can be elegant, expressive, supportive, and very edgy.
About the Saxophone:
The Role: The versatile "engine" of the woodwind section, saxophones bridge the gap between woodwinds and brass with a powerful, singing sound.
Special Qualities: They use a reed to create sound, and are a star in both Concert Band and Jazz Band.
Ideal for: Students who want a wide variety of music styles to play. Saxophone is great for those who want a bold, modern sound.
The Main Four Common Saxophone Sizes:
Soprano - Not often seen in beginner bands. Much harder mouthpiece to control. Advanced players will ‘double’ or play both soprano and another saxophone, like Alto or Tenor, which have the same fingerings.
Alto - The standard, ideal for any size student for a common sound. Most beginners start here.
Tenor - Seen in many beginning bands, a lower voiced instrument, perfect for those who love the low end sound but want to play a versatile woodwind instrument.
Baritone - The largest of the common saxophone sizes. Carries the low end of the woodwinds alongside the Bassoon and Bass Clarinet. Ideal for those with strong backs and larger hands.
