Percussion (Mallets and Drums)
The Percussion section is the only section where you are guaranteed to play many instruments, both rhythmic and melodic.
About Percussion:
The Role: The timekeeper. Percussionists are responsible for the rhythm and the "heartbeat" of the music.
Special Qualities: You don't just play one instrument; you learn many. You’ll master the Snare Drum for rhythm and Mallet instruments (like the Xylophone) for melodies, among many other fun and whacky noise makers.
Ideal for: Students with a strong sense of rhythm who like to stay active. It is perfect for those who enjoy variety and don't want to sit still for a whole concert. Players also must possess patience and diligence when the rest of the band is learning to use their breath to play their instruments.
When you register to rent a percussion instrument, you will rent what is known as a Bell Kit, you will receive a glockenspiel (small metal xylophone), mallets, drumsticks, and a practice pad snare drum.
Examples of Percussion Instruments:
Rhythmic: Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymbals, Shakers, Cowbell, Drumset, Conga, Bongos, Maracas, Triangle, Gong, Guiro, Cajon, Djembe, Tambourine, etc.
Melodic: Xylophone, Marimba, Vibraphone, Tubular Bells, Timpani, Glockenspiel, etc.
